Bloating Clinic in Gateshead
Find the Cause Behind Your Bloating
Contact Our Team Today
We aim to get back to you in 24 hours.
Bloating can be difficult to pin down because it doesn't always follow an obvious pattern.
You might wake up feeling comfortable and become progressively more bloated during the day. Perhaps it happens after almost every evening meal, alongside constipation, or only after certain foods. For some people, the abdomen feels noticeably fuller or tighter even when they haven't eaten very much.
At our bloating clinic in Gateshead, the aim is to understand your pattern of symptoms before making major changes to your diet.

“Why Am I Bloated All the Time?”
There isn't one answer.
The most common cause of bloating is excess gas in the gut, but the NHS also lists constipation, food intolerances, coeliac disease and IBS among possible causes. Some people experience more bloating around their period too.
This is why simply searching for “foods that cause bloating” can send you in the wrong direction.
At your consultation in Gateshead, we'll want to know when the bloating starts, what else happens alongside it and whether your bowel habits have changed.
Morning, Afternoon or After Meals?
Bloating mainly in the evening?
We'll look at what you've eaten throughout the whole day, not just dinner.
Bloating immediately after eating?
Meal size, eating speed, fizzy drinks and the foods within the meal may all deserve attention.
Bloating alongside constipation?
Improving bowel regularity may become a priority.
Bloating with diarrhoea, cramps or changing bowel habits?
IBS or another digestive issue may need to be considered.
IBS commonly involves bloating alongside abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhoea, and symptoms can fluctuate considerably over time.

Before You Cut Out Bread or Dairy
This is where we prefer to slow things down.
If you remove gluten, dairy, onions, garlic, beans and several fruits at the same time and your bloating improves, you've learned surprisingly little.
You don't know which change mattered.
Instead, your bloating nutrition plan in Gateshead can use a more controlled approach.
A food-and-symptom diary may help identify repeated patterns, while making one change at a time makes it easier to judge whether that change actually helped. This approach is also recommended in BDA guidance for digestive symptoms such as IBS.
Sometimes the First Changes Are Very Simple
You may not need an elaborate gut-health programme.
The NHS recommends measures such as drinking enough water, exercising regularly, chewing with your mouth closed to reduce swallowed air and considering smaller, more frequent meals if bloating is troublesome. Large quantities of fizzy drinks can also contribute.
So we may initially experiment with relatively ordinary changes.
A smaller evening meal.
Less sparkling water.
Eating more slowly.
More regular meals.
Addressing constipation.
Changing how fibre is distributed through the day.
Simple doesn't mean ineffective.
Fibre Can Help — But Don't Suddenly Double It
If constipation and bloating occur together, fibre deserves attention.
But rapidly adding large amounts of bran, beans and high-fibre foods isn't necessarily helpful.
The BDA recommends increasing fibre gradually where constipation is present because a sudden increase can worsen symptoms. Soluble-fibre sources such as oats and linseeds may be useful for some people.
At our bloating clinic in Gateshead, we'll therefore look at what you're currently eating before deciding whether fibre needs to go up, down or simply change form.
Do You Need Low FODMAP?
Possibly — but not as the first response to every bloated stomach.
A low FODMAP diet is a structured dietary approach used to help manage symptoms in some people with IBS. Importantly, it includes restriction, reintroduction and personalisation rather than permanently avoiding a huge collection of foods.
BDA guidance recommends starting with simpler dietary measures and considering more specialist dietary intervention if symptoms continue.
If low FODMAP is appropriate for you in Gateshead, it should have a clear purpose and a route towards expanding the diet again.
What Have You Already Tried?
By the time someone looks for a bloating clinic, there's often already quite a list.
Probiotics.
Peppermint tea.
No dairy.
Less gluten.
Digestive enzymes.
Fibre supplements.
A food-intolerance test.
Rather than adding another five things, we'll review what has already happened.
Did anything clearly improve symptoms? Did you change several things simultaneously? Are you still avoiding foods even though you're no longer sure why?
Sometimes untangling previous experiments is an important part of improving your diet.
When Bloating Needs Medical Assessment
Persistent bloating shouldn't automatically be treated as a nutrition problem.
The NHS advises seeing a GP if you're regularly bloated or the bloating doesn't go away. Bloating accompanied by unintentional weight loss or blood in your stool also needs medical assessment.
If you think you may have IBS and symptoms have continued for more than four weeks, NHS guidance also recommends seeing your GP so other conditions can be considered.
Our bloating support in Gateshead can work alongside appropriate investigation or an existing diagnosis rather than trying to diagnose the cause through diet alone.
Find a More Comfortable Way to Eat in Gateshead
The goal isn't to create a diet containing only foods that could never possibly produce gas.
It's to understand why you are experiencing bloating and find the least restrictive approach that works.
We'll look at your symptoms, bowel habits, normal meals, portion sizes, fibre, fluids and anything you've already removed or introduced.
Online consultations are available throughout Gateshead and surrounding areas, with recommendations adapted as we learn more about your individual digestive pattern.
Less guessing. Fewer unnecessary restrictions. A clearer approach to managing bloating.
